MCCORMICK AMBULANCE HISTORY

1962

In 1962, utilizing the experience gained as Inglewood firemen and using McCormick Mortuaries as their base of operations, Robert McCormick and Russell Chidley founded McCormick Ambulance.

Their focus was to provide emergency transportation for all of Los Angeles County with special attention to the growing South Bay area where both men lived and raised their families.

In August of 1969, Daniel Freemen Hospital and Dr. Walter Graf (the pioneer of the coronary care rescue ambulance) approached McCormick Ambulance to participate in a pilot program being spearheaded by then County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn. McCormick Ambulance furnished a large, customized vehicle staffed with a on-call coronary care nurse to respond to heart attacks.

On July 14 1970, Governor Ronald Reagan signed the Wedworth-Townsend Paramedic Act. McCormick Ambulance was the very first private ambulance company to have certified paramedics.

The company became part of Westmed in August 2002 and under the direction of Westmed's Chief Executive Officer, Joe Chidley, the company remains focused on the ideals and values that have kept it running strong for over five decades. McCormick Ambulance currently operates a network of strategically located stations throughout its Los Angeles County service area.
